Light from Darkness

The figure is drawn out of a nearly black field through thousands of pale incisions. Selective saffron gives the otherwise graphic portrait a devotional warmth.

Fine scratched lines, dense crosshatching, and broad cleared passages reverse the usual relationship between ink and paper.

What to notice

Look closely at the cheeks and hands, where the direction of each line follows the turning form.
